What are some good music software programs to buy?

I'd like a list of as many programs as possible, for creating and mixing music, editing songs, programs with effects, and programs that have as many functions/features available. I'd like a list of any program/software that you think is decently good, ranging from FREE to 1,000 dollars. I'd especially like the specs and comparisons of programs, plus the specific programs that you can use to make your own bass and such, instead of using sample loops that are unoriginal.
