How do you find out whether a non-immigrant work visa is/will be revoked without alerting anyone at CIS?

my roommate is working for a small firm under H-1B but was given his 90 day notice last week. With the job market the way it is and the kind of work he does, he's not sure if he would be able to find a new job before the 90 days run out. Since the visa still has about 2years left, he's trying to figure out whether the company has reported his departure to cis without either letting them know of their obligation or alerting cis. he'd like to use that 1 year to find work or do other things.
